Timothy Crump is dead, and Noel Estevez is incarcerated. The ripple effects of this tragedy affects not just these two young people, but their families, their friends, their neighbors, schools, and communities; and the media generalizes the issues and lumps the incident into three words: “BLACK”, “LATINO”, “BRONX”. Stereotypes are affixed, and further burden all, but on our TVs and in the news, the ways this tragedy could have been avoided are seldom discussed, and remain unfamiliar, and underfunded.

Fortunately, new “old approaches” like mediation and restorative practices are being tried and proven successful by inner city communities in Oakland, Chicago, Philadelphia, and the state of Minnesota. New Zealand no longer has, or needs, a juvenile “justice” system. Violence is not necessary, but chosen, and people are trying other ways to deal with conflict, and with bullying.

And fortunately for New York City, and the many other Timothys and Noels in our midst, the Office of School and Youth Development of the NYC Department of Education (DOE) is paying attention to these other ways, and this summer teams of teachers from schools all around our city will be trained by the DOE in mediation and classroom use of restorative practice for use. Next September too few, but still a good number of schools will be exploring how best to use this training to stem the epidemic of violence our young people face.

More attention must be paid to these efforts and more financial support given if we are to hope for a real calming of the fever, and all of us, not just Bronx young people, will need to learn the skills and make the commitment to talk it out when we feel angry and in conflict with others.

Thank you for noticing. After checking the post, it was not due to deliberating omitting Justice Sotomayor, rather that the WordPress software we use reverted the post back to an earlier edition due to an error. When the spacing was changed in the post (HTML) in formatting the photo positions, some of the content was overwritten. The error has been fixed.

By the way, this is a pretty short and not at all exhaustive list of the Puerto Ricans in the Bronx who have made some major contributions. In the realms of music and community activism especially, boricuas are very well represented.

My husband and I would love to take our grandchildren who are 6 and 4 years old. We are all lifelong Bronxites and have lived in almost every section of the Bronx at one time or another, Parkchester, Fordham, and Kingsbridge to name a few.

It'll take a herculean effort to gentrify "poverty central," especially since de Blasio wants to restore NYCHA priority to homeless families. I object to "gentrification" as a racist code term for young white people. Bronx ain't getting $10 million condos/co-ops. But I'll come to screening to listen to "experts."

Thanks for posting what Diaz said - I hadn't read it.
I understand some people would be overly sensitive but Banksy's works are meant to make you think. I grew up in Washington Heights. Many would describe Washington Heights as ghetto back in the 70's. Many would also say that your past is what you build upon. The butler, silver platter and the boy in knickers tagging "Ghetto 4 Life", to me at least, screams to me they made it despite the certain obstacles they were born facing. Any New Yorker born into poverty, any New Yorker who grew up poor and any New Yorker who escaped that has a certain amount of grit and gumption. That grit, that down and dirty ability to pull yourself back up is what I feel makes any real New York "Ghetto 4 Life". We take a lickin' and keep on tickin'.

J.lo doesn't owe anyone anything. She worked hard and made it out. Instead of worrying about what she can do, residents should worry about what THEY can do to improve current conditions in their own communities. You don't need to be a millionaire to contribute. We have to take responsibility and pride in our own communities before we expect anyone else to. We can't sit around waiting for handouts from J.lo... She has moved on and so should we.

A person may come from a certain place or background, but that doesn't have to be where they are going. Jennifer Lopez use the stereotyped Bronx image to her advantage, moved forward and not looking back.

I personally feel that people do not owe me anything. I If I want something good in life, I have to work hard for it. I try to motivate myself by being around folks who are better than me.

J-Lo has moved on. Good for her.

I remember Morris Pk Community Association being behind some not so friendly rallies to keep the neighborhood free of various undesirable ethnic groups... I grew up there, I am still ashamed of the small mindedness of the area and many of its long time residents. I hope it has changed for the better.
